About Me

Viva!El Paso - 33rd Season, 2010
I recently graduated with two BAs in English and American Literature and Chicano Studies, with a minor in writing and rhetoric. ¡Híjole! Súper estudiante, eh? As a Borderlands resident, the U.S.-Mexico border has enriched my life and I continuously infuse my environment with my academic studies.I fluently speak in English, Spanish, and, of course, that special “Border Spanish: Spanglish”.  I am fairly young, with a lot to live and learn, which means I will utilize this blog to document my understanding of Latin American Literature. My post-grad plans include volunteering with different organizations to acquire technical and grant writing experience. I am currently applying to several graduate programs in the field of rhetoric. After acquiring a Masters, I would like to join the Peace Corps or acquire a PhD. My primary career goal is to work in the non-profit sector as a technical or grant writer. Non-profit organizations that deal with the animals, arts, and literacy are held dear to my heart, and I hope to one day work with one of these organizations. I have a fondness for Latin American Literature, which led to the creation of this blog as a Senior Practicum project. This blog is geared towards anyone wishing to acquire a better understanding of Latin American Literature starting from a novice perspective.
Aside from my academic studies, I love animals, except when they decide to claw or munch on my books (looking at you, my furry cat!). My tastes in entertainment are rather eclectic, but predominantly revolve around literature and theatre. I also have a penchant for comedic films and television shows, like Bridesmaids, Community, and The Big Bang Theory to name a few. Television and film will never impress me as much as theatre, specifically the technical aspects of theatre.
For the past five seasons, I have worked at VIVA! El Paso as the Properties Designer and Mistress. VIVA! El Paso  is an outdoor musical-drama and evokes the rich cultural heritage of El Paso residents over the past 400 years. For those who are not familiar with the job position, I assign, check in/out, repair, replace, and essentially take care of any set or handheld prop used during rehearsals and performances  -- number of items vary between 250-300 per season. Since 2007, I have usually generated a ton of paperwork and have taken care of 300 items, which are distributed amongst 50 dancers, per season. In 2010 I created a 120+ page Properties Handbook for the production. I enjoy generating paperwork and interacting with the diverse and talented cast and crew each season. While this may sound like a headache to some, I absolutely LOVE what the job entails. Since 2007, I have spent every summer working with this production, and while it is tedious and a bit arduous working in El Paso’s arid climate, I would not change a thing. VIVA! El Paso embodies what I love most about literature: pride in one’s culture and it transgressing time, borders, and generations. I look forward to being involved with the production for years to come.
